UK Data Science Degree courses (July 2013)

There’s been an explosion of Data Science related degree courses in the UK in the last 6 months. I think we’re up to 10 now, including a BSc. Hence I’ve changed the title to Degree Courses rather than MSc Courses 🙂

SUMMARY OF DEGREE COURSES AVAILABLE IN THE UK

UNIVERSITY OF DUNDEE

MSC IN DATA SCIENCE

http://www.computing.dundee.ac.uk/study/postgrad/degreedetails.asp?17

Duration: 1yr full-time (£6,300), 2yr part-time (£3,150pa)

This is the course I’m doing so no bias :). It’s either a 1yr full-time or a 2yr part-time course. If your doing the part-time course there are two week-long intensive sessions held in Dundee each year, and another day for an exam. For 2013 these are in January and April, with the odd day in June. Apart from that the rest of the course is done remotely with assignments and tutorials.

By offering a timetable that only requires two weeks full time study, albeit with long days (9-5), Dundee have provided a course that is ideal for IT people already in full-time employment. Even if their employers do not provide any time off for the course, most people can manage to find two weeks from their annual leave allocation if they have to. And this is reflected in the make up of the people on this course. Most are self-funded and are doing it part-time with minimal support from their employers. This adds up to a very bright and motivated set of students 🙂

The emphasis of the course is nicely technical, focusing on the skills you need to become a Data Scientist. I won’t repeat the course outline as you can read it on the link above. There is a strong relationship with the MSC in Business Intelligence with 4 out of the 6 modules being common to both courses.

The 6 modules are:

  1. Analytical systems – introduction and overview
  2. Big Data Analysis
  3. Analytical database models and design
  4. Data analysis and visualisation
  5. Analytical languages
  6. Advanced statistics and data mining

Duration: 1yr full-time (£6,740)

The Warwick Data Analytics MSc is a new MSc course that taps into the pulse of contemporary computer science. Data Analytics is a top national and international priority, needed in every sector from cybersecurity to retail. This course has a unique international flavour, as it is operated as part of Warwick’s collaboration with the New York Centre for Urban Science and Progress.

In a recent report by e-Skills UK and SAS (Big Data Analytics: An assessment of the demand for labour and skills, 2012-2017), the demand forecast for staff with big data skills is predicted to rise by 92% between 2012 and 2017; this equates to an annual demand of approximately 28,000 positions per annum. In the same report, the demand for data scientists is said to have grown by 350% over the past five years. Remuneration levels are also good, with an advertised salary for permanent jobs in this field of around £52k per annum, compared with £43k for IT staff more generally.

UNIVERSITY OF WARWICK

BSC IN DATA SCIENCE

http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/statistics/courses/datsci/

Duration: 3yr full-time (£9,000pa)

BSc Data Science is designed for able mathematicians with an interest in pursuing sophisticated theory and methods relevant to modern applications requiring large-scale data analysis. It is organised jointly by the Department of Statistics and the Department of Computer Science to provide students with the technical skills and insight to operate at the forefront of science, industry and business analytics.

The role of data scientist has become increasingly important over the last decade. This is because data scientists hold the key to tackling the fundamental problem created by the revolution in the development of computers and automated systems in the 20th Century: how to make sense of the unprecedented volumes of data that are generated on a daily basis? Indeed, in every facet of modern life, from online shopping and social networks to scientific research and finance, we collect immensely detailed information on actions taking place throughout the world. However, without interpretation, this data is just noise. Data scientists are concerned with turning this large scale data into intelligence through the application of cutting-edge techniques in Statistics and Computer Science.

Currently, global demand for combined statistical and computing expertise outstrips supply, with evidence-based predictions suggesting a major shortage in this area for at least the next 10 years. For graduates in Data Science this shortage presents opportunities to forge careers in one of the most crucial areas of modern science.

This course will equip you with the advanced algorithm and programming skills needed to work in data analytics, and the freedom to specialise on particular kinds of data, including text analysis and data mining (online data, health informatics, and business), images (medical applications), and scientific computing and visualisation (engineering and science). It also provides you with exposure to other cutting-edge technologies (cloud and mobile applications).

Leeds is uniquely placed to deliver this breadth of experience, with world leading research across many of the major applications areas where data analysis is crucial to success. In fact, our School is one of the few departments with expertise spanning text, symbolic and scientific/numerical data analysis.

The strong interdisciplinary element to our research means that we are exceptionally well placed to provide our students with problems and data from a wide variety of other disciplines.

Science, business, engineering, medicine and government all rely on extracting insight, answers, or commercial value from increasingly large and complex data, whether from databases, from online sources, medical imaging or computer simulation.

UNIVERSITY OF ESSEX

MSC IN BIG DATA AND TEXT ANALYTICS

http://www.essex.ac.uk/coursefinder/course_details.aspx?course=MSC+G51512

Duration: 1yr full-time (£5,000)

Our modern world is witnessing a growth of online data in a variety of forms, including web documents, blogs, social networks, digital libraries, medical records, biological data and so on. Much of this data is not fully structured but contains valuable information to uncover, like emerging opinions in social networks, search trends from search engines, consumer purchase behaviour, and patterns that emerge from these huge data sources. These developments mean traditional stand-alone applications are no longer suitable to process and analyse the amount of information available. Indeed, Google’s move from a large-scale indexed database to what is called The Knowledge Graph reflects the trend to automatically analyse data on a larger scale than before.

Our MSc Big Data and Text Analytics course equips you with the knowledge to contribute to this rapidly emerging area. We give you hands on experience with various types of large-scale data and information handling, and start by providing you with a solid understanding of the underlying technologies, in particular cloud computing and high-performance computing. You obtain practical knowledge of processing textual data, on a large scale, in order to turn this data into meaningful information. You also have the chance to work on projects that are derived from actual industry needs or proposed by our industrial partners.

A wide range of additional modules allow you to focus on aspects of big data and text analytics that most interest you, including mobile and social application programming, human-computer interaction, computer vision, computer networking and computer security, plus other areas. We prepare our graduates to enter a range of employment roles related to the wider area of information management and large-scale computing.
